Student Aviator Flight Experience, Inc. (SAFE) is a Non-Profit Corporation incorporated under the laws of the state of New Jersey. SAFE’s origins date back almost a decade. A commercial pilot took some future aviators under his wing and assisted these students in flight training, while also encouraging the students to pursue a career in aviation. Those initial hours led to many students becoming FAA certificated Private Pilots and some who currently hold Airline Captain and First Officer positions for US based Airlines.
This mentorship expanded after those future aviators moved into prominent aviation careers were able to pay it forward to other young aviators. SAFE was founded to formalize this mentorship and guidance program to those who may not otherwise be in a position to explore the world of aviation.
SAFE was registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2020. This was an essential step to allow SAFE to continue to give mentorship and flight training from qualified aviation professionals to other future aviators at no cost to the students. In keeping with this tradition, SAFE aims to provide inspiration, opportunities, guidance, and direction to future pilots..
Our goal is to educate young students to all the potential pathways of a career in aviation. This is achieved by providing insight to the aviation world that their parents and counselors may not be able to answer. As one of the biggest barriers to entry in aviation is the cost of training, in addition to the mentorship and education components of SAFE’s mission, we also provide financial assistance and scholarships to underserved future aviators. Such financial assistance can cover both flight training expenses and other related costs including iPad’s, flight training software, FAA medical certificate, written exams, and FAA Check-ride exam expenses.
With the formal launch of SAFE and the background of many exceptional volunteers wanting to contribute, we are able to serve a broader community. In keeping with SAFE’s mission to reach underserved future aviators SAFE has partnered with the Franklin Township School District [one of the most diverse school districts in New Jersey], focusing primarily on Franklin Township High School (FHS). FHS students are provided opportunities both in school, through flight training courses and after-school club programs. As well as opportunities out of school including flight training at local airports.
SAFE’s goal is to open the opportunity to bright, tenacious students with a goal of entering the lucrative and in demand career aviation has to offer. Since SAFE’s first meetings with FHS students in 2019, we have given them the power and vision to realize a career in aviation is a possibility. Seeing students enter the program who had never intended on further education post high school are now looking at college aviation programs and a lifelong career path. This program is the catalyst that opens doors they did not know existed.
