Franklin High School Warriors Learn to Soar

Things are looking up for some Franklin High School students. Way up. These Warriors are part of the new Aviation Club at FHS. Made possible by a generous donation of authentic flight simulation software, students in this club are not only learning more about the science behind flight but are taking over the controls as well.

“Trying the flight simulator was an awesome experience,” said Daniel Loughran, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. “With the guidance of pilot Chebli, I was able to appreciate the complexity of flying an airplane.”

Mr. Khaled Chebli is an experienced commercial pilot who is volunteering his time to speak to our Aviation Club members. During a recent club meeting he reviewed a portion of the pre-flight safety checklist and explained the meaning behind each step. He also engaged the students with questions, “if we were to turn the plane to the right, how would that affect the speed or altitude.” Later, students had the opportunity to try the controls of the flight simulator and experience operating an aircraft.

“We have had up to 20 students attend the club, but a core group of 12 students have really shown interest”, said Dr. Insu Yi physics teacher at FHS and the Aviation Club advisor. Those students participate for a number of reasons, “I like aviation and want to get my pilot’s license,” said one club member. Another student’s motivation, “I want to purse being a pilot as my career.”

It is providing exposure to aviation as a career choice which motivates Chebli to speak to students, “There are career opportunities as commercial and small aircraft pilots as well mechanical and other support opportunities. I look forward to working with the school counselors at FHS to assist students who are interested in this field. I was given encouragement and guidance when I was younger in pursing this career and want to share my enthusiasm with these students,” said Mr. Chebli

Student enthusiasm will surely soar as the club continues. On the horizon for these students, additional opportunities to use the flight simulator in class, a visit a local airport and perhaps actual flight time as well.
